Penangan Junior MasterChef Australia

Who doesn't love the Junior MasterChef Australia series? We loved it, tried not to miss the show every weekday. It was amazing seeing these children aged 9 to 12 years come up with various mouth watering dishes, most of it I have never cooked!!! The fact that these children cooly and calmly cooking in the time given never cease to amaze me. Why. . .  I would probably freak out !!!

Anyway, watching the series inspired DS to become little chef himself and he always claimed that he could do this and he could do that whenever he saw them cooking. The fact that he never cooked  seemed to skip his mind. He does have a lot of confidence though. . . .

Seeing his eagerness to become little chef, I decided that his next homework project would be cooking !!! Last term, they learned all about Ancient Greek in History. When I say "all", it means ALL from how the Greek dress, their gods and goddess, the various myths Achilles, Pandora Box, their prowess in wars and naturally what they ate and drank. So, one of the homework that the children may (they need not) do is to prepare a Greek dish, write the recipe and record how they make them !!!

This is great !!!! I searched the internet for super duper easy Greek recipes and easy to find ingredients and all I have to do now is standby with my camera.

So here is our future Junior MasterChef wannabe :-

Spanakopita Cheese Triangles

And let's see the making of Spanakopita Cheese Triangles. . .

Fold it so it becomes triangle

Brush the end with more olive/butter

It became our dinner that night, hmmm not bad really :D

We printed the step by step photos and turn them into a booklet as his homework. He received 2 extra points, for printing the recipe and for making the booklet.

But most importantly, he enjoyed making them and has learned since then to make his own scramble eggs :D

Mom's Note : Well it's a long way to the day his mother can quit cooking for the family *sigh*

International Lunch

Date : 13th May 2011

On International Day, normally parents were required to prepare lunch for their children's class. It was arranged that Y4 classes would join Y3 classes for the lunch. That was great because DS would have more halal food to eat since S who hailed from Brunei had a son in Y3.

Table laden with international food. . .
I was required to make something sweet, so I decided to make kuih keria. I thought the donut look-a-like would probably entice the children to eat them.

There it is my kuih keria, complete with Jalur Gemilang and description...

I also decided to make sate, well actually I enlisted the help of DH. I never marinate sate, whenever we decide to have sate, it is officially DH's job to marinate it. I only helped him to grill it the next morning after I came back from the school parade. The sate was not so bad really :D

Beef sate, hey where's the Jalur Gemilang ??
Now let's us see some photos of the kids enjoying the sumptious food :D

Say hi  boys. . . :D

Malaysian Food Ambassador DS, showing his Head Teacher and Miss RH the sate and asking them to try it :D
I suppose the idea of the International Lunch is to promote culture and food awareness among the international children. By sitting together and eating the various types of food, children are hopefully more tolerant and respectful of each other. Unfortunately, children being children, they tend to eat only those food that they know or have eaten before. From experience, it is sometimes safer to stick to something generally loved by them such as pizza and pasta. So for us, perhaps it's better to cook mee goreng (since it looks like pasta) as compared to nasi goreng. And another thing, do not bring too much. It's such a waste seeing the number of food transferred to the Staff Room and later, left uneaten !!!

Hmmm. . .  what happenned to my food then??

Alhamdulillah. . . habis :D
I wonder who ate them???

This boy must be the culprit - look at the number of sticks on his plate!!
Hehehee. . . no. . no. .  I only brought about 30 pieces of sate, so of course it's all gone right. As for kuih keria, alhamdulillah, there was a few pieces left, so I quickly distributed them to the mothers :D

When those empty little stomachs were full, some took the opportunity to have a disco party in the class :D

Hoola hoop dance ???

And monkey dance ???

:D

International Day May 2011

Dear. . . dear . . . it's been 8 long months since I updated this blog. Oh dear. . .  I think I have a much difficult task at hand because the photos seem to have gone haywire. Let's hope I haven't lost everything.. . .

Now what happenned after DS came back from his school trip? Oh yeah they had International Day in school. On this day, the kids were allowed to wear their national/traditional dress or any clothes that they feel connected to. Most kids turned up in their traditional clothes but some did turn up in football jersey of their countries and also judo uniform. Parents were also encouraged to wear the traditional clothes when they came to watch the parade, unfortunately not many parents did that.

The International Day in British School was much simpler compared to The International School of Amsterdam. Here, the children paraded in the school compound for the parents for approximately 5 minutes, then they went inside for the school's activity. The whole school parade took about half an hour only. It seemed hardly worthwhile for the parents to dress up in our bling bling dress, only to go home less than an hour later. Anyway, let's see some of the photos that I managed to take on that day.

Around 9 a.m. children started to parade in front of the parents. They came out class by class accompanied by the class teacher.
Class L4RH
Some turned up in jeans and football jersey :D
Some in judo uniform, he must be Japanese :D

Some came out running. . . ohh that's my DS
Some came out in her baju tidor kelawar. . . That's my dear son's class teacher Mrs K btw :D
Much as I dislike disagree with most of her way of teachings, I did not have the heart to tell her that she was wearing baju tidor when she proudly pointed that the dress was given to her by her ex Malaysian student or was it friend? I did not remember. But the joker in me couldn't help smiling when I saw her came out trailing in her kelawar dress.

Aahh. . . .  cute little girls

And sexy teacher !

And here are DS with his 3 Bruneian friends :D

Later, the kids had international lunch in their year group. I shall try to upload more photos from the event.
